My recent visit to Chicago in June was unexpectedly cut short. What began as a planned week-long adventure took an abrupt turn, forcing us to hasten our return home. While the initial days of the trip were nothing short of wonderful, a sudden family emergency required our immediate presence. As you might recall, we had to rush home to say our goodbyes to Kya, a story that remains close to my heart.

Despite the bittersweet ending, the time we did spend in Chicago, particularly after my conference concluded, was absolutely unforgettable. We immersed ourselves in one of the city’s most dynamic neighborhoods: Fulton Market, often considered the heart of the larger West Loop area. This district, bustling with energy and innovation, quickly captured our affection and proved to be a true highlight of our trip.

Once a gritty hub of meat-packing, warehouses, and industrial activity, Fulton Market has undergone a remarkable transformation. Today, it stands as a shining example of urban renewal, evolving into Chicago’s premier destination for truly incredible restaurants, chic bars, luxurious hotels, and unique boutiques. Its industrial past is still hinted at through repurposed buildings, but the air is now thick with the aroma of gourmet cuisine and the buzz of vibrant social life.

Our days spent exploring this district were utterly intoxicating. The streets were perpetually alive, filled with a delightful mix of locals and tourists, all drawn to the area’s magnetic appeal. There was a palpable energy that made every stroll an adventure, every corner a new discovery.

We were even lucky enough to be there during a live music festival, with melodic tunes drifting from street corners and adding to the festive atmosphere. If you’re heading to Chicago and your primary goal is to indulge in sincerely delicious food and drink, then this guide to Fulton Market and the wider West Loop is tailor-made for you. Whether you have a full 48 hours to dedicate to culinary exploration or simply wish to spend a portion of your Chicago trip savoring this particular neighborhood, prepare to tantalize your taste buds. Here’s what every food lover should undoubtedly include on their West Loop itinerary!

Chicago Food Planet Tour – Gateway To The West Loop

While I often enjoy crafting my own food tours when exploring new neighborhoods, sometimes the best way to experience a culinary scene is through a guided tour that offers perfectly portioned small bites, allowing you to sample more without overindulging. This approach is especially appealing when you want to try a diverse range of dishes without committing to full entrees at every single stop – because, let’s be honest, we’re all trying to maintain those “summer bods” before the colder weather sets in, right? 😉

The Chicago Food Planet Tour’s “Gateway To The West Loop” was an experience my husband (“the Man”) and I absolutely cherished. Over the course of our delightful walking tour, we visited five distinct establishments, each offering a unique and delicious taste of the neighborhood. From savoring classic Italian flavors to indulging in authentic Roman-style pizza and so much more, the entire experience was simply fantastic. Not only were we guided by a truly incredible and knowledgeable tour guide, but the opportunity to connect with a diverse group of strangers was right up my alley. It felt like a walking community table, where conversations flowed as freely as the delicious food, allowing us to genuinely get to know our fellow food enthusiasts.

During the tour, I was actually pregnant, which meant I had to gracefully decline the offered alcoholic pairings. Instead, I passed on my drinks to our fellow tour-goers, who very kindly presented us with a thoughtful gift for our impending arrival. It was one of those truly special, heartwarming moments that simply can’t be planned or manufactured.

Allow me to share more details on my absolute favorite bites from this specific tour. Trust me, this is an investment in culinary pleasure you will not regret. Every penny is worth it, especially if you can enjoy the thoughtfully paired alcoholic beverages!

Tour Highlights: Unforgettable Bites

  • Cemitas Puebla: Our first stop introduced us to the sensational cemita bun. If you haven’t had one, you absolutely must seek it out! This incredible sandwich featured a generously stuffed cemita bun, brimming with succulent pulled chicken, smoky chipotle, creamy avocado, and rich cheese. The recipe, faithfully tracing back to Tony Anteliz’s family in Puebla, Mexico, delivered an unmistakable taste of authenticity that transported us straight to its origins.
  • Bonci: This was a true throwback to my time living in Rome. Bonci offers authentic Roman-style pizza, sold by the pound, just as you’d find on the bustling streets of Italy. The crust was exquisitely fluffy and light, a perfect vehicle for the fresh, vibrant toppings. Each bite instantly whisked me back to those cherished Roman days.
  • Do-Rite Donuts: This establishment perfectly encapsulates its name – simple food, done right, with exceptional precision. The old-fashioned buttermilk doughnut I sampled boasted the most incredible texture I’ve ever encountered in a doughnut. Its moist interior remained perfectly soft and comforting, even surviving our last-minute road trip home the following day – providing precisely the comfort food I desperately needed during a challenging time.
  • Kuma’s Corner: I am incredibly excited that Kuma’s Corner is expanding to Denver! This place is truly unique, combining a heavy metal and horror movie theme with absolutely killer burgers. The memory of sitting there, watching the delightfully terrible horror film Walrus, while savoring a local beer and a beef slider topped with rich pulled pork, is forever etched in my mind. It was a masterpiece of greasy goodness, and I literally cannot wait for their arrival in Denver!

Must-Have Coffee Fix in the West Loop

LIMITLESS is an absolutely fantastic cafe situated right in Fulton Market (they also have a location in River North if you find yourself further uptown). This isn’t just any coffee shop; it’s a haven for unique and health-conscious beverages. Their menu boasts an impressive array of creative lattes, including intriguing options like a charcoal latte (which I was dying to try but opted against due to my pregnancy at the time), lavender latte, rose latte, super greens latte, and the golden milk latte – the very one I happily indulged in.

My golden milk latte was a masterpiece, a rich blend of turmeric, ginger, black pepper, vanilla, pink salt, cayenne, honey, and milk, all crowned with a delicate dusting of cinnamon. Simply put, it was the most amazing concoction I’ve ever had, especially considering it was completely espresso-free! The complex warmth of the spices lingered pleasantly on my tongue, providing a comforting and soothing start to my morning, a perfect alternative when my usual coffee was off-limits.

Fulton Market Kitchen For Dinner

From the very moment you step into Fulton Market Kitchen, prepare for an experience where you’ll feast not only with your taste buds but with your eyes as well. The restaurant’s ambiance is truly captivating. The main dining room, with its soaring high ceilings, manages to feel surprisingly intimate thanks to thoughtfully arranged small tables and cozy chairs, perfect for a romantic dinner for two. Of course, larger tables are also available to accommodate any gathering size, but the overall design ensures a comfortable, enveloping atmosphere. The whole space draws you in, creating a sense of wonder despite its grand scale.

The art adorning the walls is a spectacle in itself, ranging from thought-provoking pieces to playfully cheeky canvases (keep an eye out for Batman!). Stunningly colorful murals create an eclectic and funky visual narrative that enhances the restaurant’s unique character. It’s such an incredibly fun spot, and that’s not solely due to the exceptional staff and the engaging space – the food itself is downright luscious. I mean it; this was truly one of those meals that left me utterly floored, a culinary memory I revisit often.

I can still vividly recall the taste of the warm sourdough bread, perfect for dipping into the slowly melting beef fat jus candle. This savory jus gently mingled with a sweet and spicy tomato jam, creating an exquisite combination of flavors that I honestly wanted to drink straight from the bowl (even if it meant risking my hair catching fire from the candle!). This unexpected, innovative starter set the stage for an extraordinary meal.

Another true highlight of our dinner was the dry-aged bolognese with cavatelli. Oh, man, words almost fail to capture its magnificence. The sauce possessed an incredible depth of flavor – velvety, rich, and profoundly satisfying. My husband’s description was so perfectly apt: “it’s a Barry White song.” Yes, yes, it absolutely is. The warm, rich comfort of the sauce, infused with smoky notes from the trimmings of dry-aged beef used in other dishes, paired flawlessly with the chewy, homemade cavatelli noodles. A burst of freshness from the herbs elevated the dish further, creating a symphony of textures and tastes. I am now utterly determined to try and recreate this at home. Lord knows I can’t age beef myself, but I’m sure there’s a way to capture a version of that glorious flavor again!

Though I don’t typically eat much walleye, Fulton Market Kitchen’s rendition was nothing short of spectacular. It was served with a savory pork jus and a decadent bacon vegetable ragout featuring tender peas and potatoes. This preparation created a surprisingly hearty fish dish, bursting with smoky, salty, and savory notes – a truly unique and memorable take on a classic.

Finally, dessert arrived, and both options were absolutely spectacular. First, the ice cream-filled mochi. I had only ever encountered traditional mochi before, but the addition of ice cream in the center? Holy WOW! This immediately became my new dessert obsession. I mean that sincerely; I’ve been buying ice cream-filled mochi from my local store every week since as my go-to sweet treat. While the store-bought version is good, it simply doesn’t compare to the homemade perfection at Fulton Market Kitchen. The apricot ice cream paired with strawberry jam and a delicate amaretto zabaglione truly sang on the plate. My husband and I found ourselves playfully vying for the very last bite!

The other dessert that made me swoon was the s’mores in a jar. This wasn’t just any s’more; it was an elevated culinary experience. Layers of rich chocolate ganache, crunchy graham cracker, and perfectly toasted marshmallow were all encased within a jar. The magical touch came when the jar was opened, releasing a cloud of smoky aroma that wafted into our nostrils, instantly evoking the nostalgic scent of a campfire. This infusion of smoke permeated the dessert, creating a flavor profile that transcended any s’more you could ever hope to make at home. It was pure smoky, chocolatey bliss.

Other Culinary Highlights in Chicago’s West Loop

If your West Loop exploration extends beyond 48 hours, or if you simply wish to squeeze in a few more exceptional dining experiences, here are a couple of additional recommendations that stand out:

  • Carnivale: We had the pleasure of dining here at the conclusion of the Mediavine Conference, and it was absolutely fantastic. Carnivale offers a vibrant Latin-inspired menu with bold flavors, creative cocktails, and an incredibly lively atmosphere, complete with live dancing. The energy was simply infectious!
  • Girl & The Goat: For those familiar with renowned Chef Stephanie Izard, Girl & The Goat represents her initial and immensely successful venture in Fulton Market. Though we didn’t get the chance to experience it on this particular trip, it remains at the very top of my list for our next visit to Chicago. It’s consistently lauded for its innovative dishes and vibrant dining experience.
