Our Sweet Pre-Baby Escape

Elevating Your Babymoon: A Serene Escape to Cloud Camp at The Broadmoor, Colorado Springs

Being pregnant in the middle of a pandemic presents its own unique set of circumstances, to say the least. Thankfully, we found a perfect opportunity for a mini babymoon right in our backyard, in nearby Colorado Springs, at the exquisite Cloud Camp at The Broadmoor! This wilderness haven, majestically located atop Cheyenne Mountain, offers a truly different experience, literally taking you above the clouds. It’s an oasis of quiet and serene tranquility, making it an ideal getaway for couples seeking connection and relaxation before welcoming a new addition to their family.

This year, in particular, hasn’t unfolded as any of us had anticipated, has it? 2020 felt like it transformed into a “dumpster fire” faster than we could even process it. Yet, amidst the global uncertainties and personal challenges, my goal has been to find the silver linings and make the absolute most of every moment.

I must confess, knowing a little bundle of joy is on the way has an incredible way of helping you discover the good in everyday life. Our upcoming arrival has become a beacon of hope and happiness, and for that, I am endlessly grateful.

My husband (“The Man”) and I initially hesitated about planning a babymoon at all, given the state of the world. However, after much deliberation, we decided that if we chose a destination close to home and ensured it was a truly secluded getaway, we would both feel far more comfortable taking a couple of days to ourselves. This led us to meticulously plan our serene escape for a much-needed mini babymoon.

Embracing Mountain Serenity: Our Babymoon Journey to Cloud Camp

Rather than opting for our usual stay at the main The Broadmoor resort, which we’ve enjoyed immensely in the past, we embarked on a captivating ascent up, up, up Cheyenne Mountain to the extraordinary Cloud Camp. This particular choice for our babymoon was driven by a strong desire for both profound relaxation and a sense of safety and seclusion, especially important given the ongoing global situation. We yearned for a sanctuary where we could genuinely unwind, disconnect from daily stresses, and strengthen our connection as a couple before our family expands.

Cloud Camp unquestionably offers a distinct and memorable experience, one that I would highly recommend for couples, particularly those who cherish the great outdoors and appreciate a luxurious touch to wilderness retreats. While we had an absolutely lovely time overall, I do feel it’s important to provide an honest perspective, especially for expectant mothers. Considering how far along I was in my pregnancy and my usual susceptibility to feeling winded, the high elevation presented a bit more of a challenge than anticipated, and I experienced slightly more swelling than I might have expected. These are the invaluable lessons we often only learn through experience, aren’t they?

Nevertheless, if you’re an active couple accustomed to mountain environments and seeking to spend some truly special, uninterrupted time with your partner, Cloud Camp provides an unparalleled setting. It’s a wonderful way to foster intimacy and feel utterly secluded, far removed from the clamor of everyday life. The crisp mountain air, the panoramic vistas that stretch as far as the eye can see, and the profound quietude collectively create an unmatched sense of tranquility, allowing you to focus purely on each other and the joyous anticipation of your little one’s arrival. It’s a babymoon destination that truly encourages mindful connection and ultimate relaxation.

The Enchanting Story Behind Cloud Camp: A Secluded Mountain Retreat with Rich History

To truly grasp the unique allure of Cloud Camp, one must delve into its fascinating origins, tracing back to the visionary mind of The Broadmoor’s founder, Spencer Penrose. In the early 20th century, Penrose, a true pioneer and philanthropist, envisioned and brought to life a magnificent retreat perched majestically atop Cheyenne Mountain. This wasn’t merely a mountain lodge; it was a distinctive sanctuary where he not only hosted esteemed guests but also, quite famously, housed an intriguing collection of wild animals – bears, cougars, snakes, and a variety of other creatures. Imagine the captivating stories and lively discussions that once echoed through those very walls!

While the wild menagerie is now a part of history, the spirit of exclusivity, adventure, and deep immersion in nature lives on. Cloud Camp has been meticulously renovated and lovingly transformed into a luxurious, all-inclusive mountain camp, specifically designed to offer an elevated experience for adults. It masterfully blends rustic charm with the sophisticated elegance and impeccable service that are hallmarks of The Broadmoor. With a thoughtfully curated selection of private cabins and exquisitely appointed rooms within the main lodge, guests are treated to an all-encompassing experience. Everything from gourmet, chef-prepared meals and handcrafted beverages to a diverse array of engaging activities is seamlessly included, allowing for a truly worry-free stay. This unique setting, imbued with the renowned Broadmoor flair, solidifies Cloud Camp as an unparalleled destination for those seeking profound relaxation and an authentic escape from the everyday.

For us, the paramount focus of this babymoon was, without question, profound relaxation. This particular year had already presented an unprecedented amount of stress for everyone globally. Layering on top of that the exhilarating yet demanding process of preparing for a baby, the joys and challenges of training a new puppy, and navigating the intricate and often tiring journey of pregnancy, it became abundantly clear: we desperately needed a couple of days completely off the beaten path. We yearned for a place where we could simply be – to breathe deeply, to reflect on our journey, and to savor the quiet, precious moments before our lives were wonderfully transformed forever.

The journey to Cloud Camp itself forms an integral part of the adventure. As you ascend the winding roads, you pass directly through the famous Cheyenne Mountain Zoo – a landmark I, quite surprisingly, have yet to visit! The drive takes you progressively higher and higher, through dense, whispering pine forests and, on many days, literally through the clouds, until you finally arrive at the majestic main lodge, which appears to be delicately perched above the entire world below.

Our arrival day was particularly enchanting, enveloped in a thick, ethereal fog and a refreshingly cool, crisp chill. This atmospheric condition added an extra layer of mystique and charm, making the drive feel almost otherworldly, as if we were being transported not just to a different physical location, but to another time altogether. The swirling mist created a profound sense of secluded enchantment, truly solidifying the feeling of being “above the clouds” in a dreamlike state.

For the more adventurous, there is an enchanting option to embark on a traditional mule ride up the mountain to arrive at Cloud Camp. While I’m certain it would be an incredibly memorable and scenic way to commence a mountain escape, as a five-month pregnant lady, this wasn’t a practical choice for me. However, it’s definitely an experience to consider for those not navigating pregnancy!

Culinary Delights at 9,000 Feet: An All-Inclusive Dining Experience at Cloud Camp

Breakfast at Cloud Camp on the deck image

The dining experience at Cloud Camp is a delightful departure from the expansive offerings you might typically find at the main Broadmoor resort. Here, the focus shifts to a more intimate, rustic, yet equally luxurious and refined culinary journey. Traditionally, breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served at a grand communal table, a concept designed to foster a wonderful sense of camaraderie and shared experience among guests. During our visit, with necessary COVID precautions thoughtfully implemented, the dining setup was adapted for safety and comfort, yet the inherent charm, warmth, and exceptional quality of the meals served in the beautiful rustic cabin dining room remained absolutely outstanding.

Each day commenced with a generous breakfast buffet, featuring an enticing array of fresh, wholesome, and delicious options perfectly prepared to energize us for a day of mountain adventures and relaxation. Lunch provided a straightforward yet satisfying selection, typically offering a couple of excellent choices for a starter, a fulfilling main course, and a delightful dessert. The undisputed highlight, however, was the exquisite four-course dinner. Guests had the pleasure of selecting from a carefully curated, rotating menu, with each dish artfully prepared. These culinary masterpieces were perfectly complemented by a comprehensive list of fine wines or any beverage from the fully stocked bar. The unwavering focus on fresh, high-quality, and often locally sourced ingredients, combined with impeccable, personalized service, truly elevates the mountain dining experience to gourmet levels.

As an expectant mother, I was particularly impressed by their fantastic and creative mocktail game! It was such a pleasure to sit back, sip on beautifully crafted non-alcoholic beverages, and feel completely integrated into the convivial atmosphere, enjoying the evening right alongside everyone else. It’s these thoughtful and inclusive touches that truly enhance the overall guest experience, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, feels utterly pampered and catered to. The attention to detail in every aspect of the dining, even for mocktails, was truly commendable.

And let’s not forget the ever-present snack spread! Available generously throughout the day, complete with freshly baked cookies and a variety of savory treats, it proved to be an absolute lifesaver for a perpetually hungry pregnant woman. There’s an incredible convenience and comfort in not having to actively seek someone out to satisfy those frequent, unpredictable cravings that seem to strike every couple of hours. This comprehensive, all-inclusive approach to food and drink truly allows for unadulterated relaxation, removing any worries about logistics, schedules, or unexpected extra costs, allowing guests to simply savor the moment.

An Abundance of Activities: Keeping Busy (or Blissfully Relaxing) at Cloud Camp

Cloud Camp distinguishes itself not merely through its breathtaking, serene setting and exceptional dining, but also through its impressively extensive array of activities. These pursuits are thoughtfully designed to cater to every guest’s preference, whether you’re seeking high-energy adventure or simply wish to embrace profound relaxation. If your ideal getaway involves more than just kicking back with a good book, you’ll find an endless list of engaging and enriching activities to keep you busy and entertained amidst the stunning mountain scenery.

Mornings at Cloud Camp can begin with invigorating yoga sessions, stretching both body and mind in the crisp, pure mountain air. For those eager to explore the natural grandeur, there are expertly guided morning or afternoon hikes led by knowledgeable staff, offering fascinating insights into the local flora, fauna, and geology. Alternatively, guests can grab a detailed map and embark on their own self-guided adventure, discovering hidden trails and breathtaking vistas at their own leisurely pace, as we happily chose to do. The freedom to explore on your terms is a true luxury.

The camp also offers a delightful variety of classic outdoor games, such as cornhole, perfect for some friendly competition and lighthearted fun. For a truly unique and memorable experience, guests can participate in mule rides – a traditional way to traverse the mountain (though, as previously mentioned, this was not a practical option for me during my pregnancy). Archery instructions are a definite highlight and a fantastic opportunity to try something new; I personally loved it and even managed to hit a bullseye, which was incredibly satisfying! The cooking club provides a delightful, brief demonstration by the head chef, offering a fascinating glimpse into the culinary magic happening behind the scenes, an activity we thoroughly enjoyed for its informative and engaging nature.

As evening gracefully descends upon the mountain, the inviting fire pit transforms into the warm, glowing heart of the camp. Here, guests gather to share stories, forge new connections, and indulge in the quintessential campfire tradition of s’mores making after dinner – a truly perfect and nostalgic end to any day at Cloud Camp.

Beyond these structured and guided activities, a wealth of other options awaits. You can engage in classic lawn games like horseshoes or more cornhole, or unleash your creativity with various crafts – we made beautiful wood-burned ornaments, one for ourselves as a cherished keepsake of our babymoon, and another for my incredibly kind mom, who graciously took care of our beloved pups while we were away. Stargazing opportunities at Cloud Camp are unparalleled, thanks to the high elevation and minimal light pollution, offering a dazzling display of the night sky. Disc golf, a selection of engaging board games, tranquil bird watching, and spirited pickleball matches are also available, ensuring there’s truly never a dull moment unless you choose for it to be so.

Last, but certainly not least, are the undeniably inviting hot tubs. Perched strategically to offer absolutely stunning, panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, they present a truly sublime experience. I vividly recall wishing I could have indulged in a warm, therapeutic soak; the thought of cuddling up with my partner, a couple of mugs of their delicious mulled cider in hand, and gazing out at the magnificent, twinkling vista, felt incredibly romantic and utterly perfect. Even without the soak, the sheer allure and peaceful promise of these serene havens were palpable, making them a highlight of the Cloud Camp experience for many guests.
