Ginger Simple Syrup

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • One 2-inch piece of fresh ginger peeled and thinly sliced
Cocktail

  • 10 mint leaves
  • 1/2 ? oz ginger simple syrup
  • 2 1/2 oz bourbon
  • Seltzer water
  • Crushed Ice

instructions

For the Ginger Simple Syrup:

  • 1. In a small saucepan, combine sugar, water, and the thinly sliced fresh ginger. Stir well to integrate. Bring this mixture to a boil over high heat.
  • 2. Once boiling, immediately remove the saucepan from the heat. Cover it tightly and let the ginger steep for 15 to 30 minutes. Remember, the longer it steeps, the more robust and intense the ginger flavor will become!
  • 3. Carefully strain out all the ginger slices from the syrup. Allow the ginger simple syrup to cool completely before transferring it to an airtight container. Store it in the refrigerator, where it will keep fresh for up to 2 weeks.

For the Sparkling Ginger Mint Julep:

  • 1. In a sturdy glass (or directly in your julep cup), place the mint leaves and the ginger simple syrup. Using a wooden muddler, gently muddle the mint leaves with the syrup. The goal is to lightly bruise the mint to release its oils, not to tear it into tiny pieces.
  • 2. If you muddled in a separate glass, strain the mixture into a julep or rocks glass. Fill the glass generously with crushed ice.
  • 3. Pour the bourbon over the crushed ice. Top off the glass with seltzer water until it’s full.
