Embarking on a journey to Belgium this year was, quite simply, a lifelong aspiration realized. As someone who readily admits to being a devout chocoholic and a recent but passionate convert to the world of craft beer, immersing myself in the country renowned for these two delights was nothing short of pure bliss. My partner and I, despite having only a fleeting couple of days in Brussels, made every moment count. We meticulously explored countless sights, and more importantly, indulged in an incredible array of food and drink that the city generously offers.
Within this guide, you’ll discover my ultimate recommendations for where to eat, drink, and truly experience the joy of Brussels, whether your itinerary spans a quick 48 hours or extends to a full week. However, before we delve into the specifics, there’s one crucial piece of advice I must impart to ensure you make the most of your adventure.
To be completely transparent – a quality you know I always strive for here, regardless of popular opinion – I strongly advise allocating a smaller portion of your precious time to Brussels’ Old Town. While undeniably charming, it can often become overwhelmingly touristy and detract from a more authentic Belgian experience.

I have highlighted my favorite spots within the Old Town in the comprehensive list of food, drinks, and sights below. Still, you could comfortably dedicate just a late afternoon or an evening to fully appreciating this historical core. It’s the vibrant rest of the city that truly warrants additional exploration, particularly the chic Sablon neighborhood and its charming surrounding upper town areas. All the intricate details are laid out for you below, but the key takeaway is to genuinely immerse yourself in the city’s unique culture. Dare to venture beyond the typical, overcrowded tourist hotspots and discover Brussels’ hidden gems!

Trust me on this; your taste buds and sense of adventure will thank you. 😉
Where to Eat in Brussels: A Foodie’s Delight
Brussels is a culinary paradise, offering everything from gourmet street food to traditional Belgian comfort dishes. Prepare your palate for an unforgettable journey through flavors both familiar and surprisingly new.
Kombi Bar
Nestled in my absolute favorite Brussels neighborhood, The Sablon, Kombi Bar instantly captured my attention. How could it not, with a vintage VW bus charmingly positioned right inside its doorway? This funky little establishment perfectly embodies the eclectic spirit of Sablon. It’s the ideal spot to grab an affordably priced Belgian beer and settle in for some seriously delicious food. Their burgers are incredibly meaty and generously stacked, while the Croque Kombi – a Belgian twist on a Croque Monsieur featuring savory bolognese – is an absolute revelation. These hearty indulgences provided the perfect fuel for our extensive daily explorations. With its reasonable prices and vibrant location, Kombi Bar is a must-visit for a casual yet memorable meal.

Sushi Shop
You might recall my enthusiastic praise for Sushi Shop on Instagram, and I’m thrilled to echo that sentiment here. Also conveniently located in Sablon, a short stroll from Notre Dame, Sushi Shop consistently delivers fresh, expertly crafted sushi that’s perfect whether you prefer to dine in or grab it to go. We particularly enjoyed an evening sitting in the charming tiny square just outside the restaurant, savoring a bottle of wine from a nearby convenience store, a couple of glasses, and a delectable selection of their rolls. It’s an informal yet delightful dining experience.

My Be Pop
For a unique and truly delicious snack while exploring the Sablon area, you absolutely cannot miss My Be Pop. This charming Belgian gourmet popcorn shop offers an incredible array of flavors, ranging from exciting spicy options to perfectly balanced sweet and savory creations. The quaint little shop itself is situated along a picturesque side street leading up to Sablon Notre Dame, a scene that feels as though it’s lifted straight from a movie. I highly recommend trying the passionfruit popcorn – it’s a delightful surprise. Just try your best not to devour the entire bag before you reach the top of the hill, or you’ll likely find yourself buying more on your way back down. This, I can confirm, is a true story!

Nüetnigenough
Finding a truly exceptional restaurant near Brussels’ Grand Place can be a challenge. The surrounding side streets are often filled with overpriced and mediocre eateries, making it difficult to find a delicious meal that doesn’t break the bank. However, if you venture just a few blocks beyond the main tourist throngs, you’ll discover Nüetnigenough, a hidden gem. This small, “hole-in-the-wall” restaurant, though modest in size with limited tables, offers incredibly delicious food that highlights traditional Belgian cuisine. Their beer list is equally fantastic, and the knowledgeable staff are experts at recommending the perfect pairing for your meal. I particularly recommend their Carbonnades a la Flamande (Flemish-style beef stew), a rich and flavorful classic, and their Boulettes de Veau a la Gantoise (veal meatballs) which literally melt in your mouth. Be aware that Nüetnigenough doesn’t take reservations, so arrive early or be prepared to enjoy a beer outside while you wait for a table – it’s absolutely worth it!

Gatsu Gatsu
While there are numerous quick-eat options near Grand Sablon, Gatsu Gatsu emerged as a clear favorite. This vibrant noodle shop creates a delightful “wok alley” experience right in the heart of the city. With an impressive array of ingredients and an insane amount of flavors to choose from, you can fully customize your own wok dish to your exact preferences. It proved to be the ideal spot for us to pause mid-exploration, grabbing a quick yet satisfying lunch before continuing our sightseeing adventures.

Brussels Street Waffles
When it comes to authentic Belgian street waffles, my experience suggests that it doesn’t matter too much where you choose to indulge. Waffle stands are truly ubiquitous throughout the city, constantly churning out fresh, warm waffles, adorned with an endless array of sweet and fruity toppings. My personal favorite combination was a decadent mix of Nutella and white chocolate, generously sprinkled with colorful candies. The small shop located near the Manneken Pis statue was surprisingly excellent – and offered a convenient way to momentarily escape the overwhelming crowds of tourists snapping countless photos of the tiny, albeit underwhelming, peeing boy statue. Seriously, while it’s a major tourist attraction in Brussels, the statue itself can be quite a letdown. More on that particular piece of “nonsense” below!

Belgian Frites Papy
My absolute favorite fries in Brussels came from a chain called Belgian Frites Papy. These stands are dotted all over the city, and they consistently deliver piping hot, perfectly crispy fries served with your choice of delectable sauce. The Samurai sauce quickly became my top pick – a wonderfully spicy concoction with a sambal and mayonnaise base, so good I even recreated it at home for this sandwich! The curry ketchup was another clear winner, offering just the right hint of curry flavor without overpowering the crispy potato goodness. Don’t leave Brussels without trying a cone of these iconic Belgian fries!

Where to Drink in Brussels: A Beer Lover’s Journey
When you journey to Belgium, make it your mission to indulge in as much authentic Belgian beer as possible. That was certainly my primary goal upon arriving in this incredible country. I happily traded my usual craft cocktail routine for a dedicated exploration of Belgian brews every single day we were there. Below, you’ll find my top recommendations for exceptional places to savor amazing beer and create truly memorable experiences in Brussels.

Au Bon Vieux Temps
Tucked away in a quaint alley in Brussels’ Old Town lies Au Bon Vieux Temps, a true Belgian beer hall that feels like stepping back in time. Dating all the way back to 1695, this establishment exudes history and character, from its stunning stained-glass windows to its intricate woodwork and a magnificent fireplace. The staff, including a wonderfully “salty” barmaid who completely charmed me, are part of its unique appeal. This is the quintessential place to immerse yourself in the authentic Belgian beer experience in Brussels. The atmosphere alone makes it an unforgettable spot to simply sit and slowly sip a beer. While the tap list isn’t overwhelmingly vast, it’s carefully curated, featuring a solid variety of seriously incredible Belgian beers. Moreover, it offers a refreshing alternative to the often overcrowded and rowdy scenes found at places like Delirium Cafe just down the street.

Moeder Lambic
Once you’ve had your fill of the historic city center and are ready to explore some more contemporary beer havens, Moeder Lambic is an absolute must-visit. This establishment boasts a truly ridiculous and impressive beer list, featuring an extensive array of brews, with a particular focus on local beers from Brussels. Stepping into Moeder Lambic, you’ll instantly feel like a local, surrounded by passionate beer enthusiasts. We originally intended to stop for just one beer but quickly found ourselves staying for two more rounds, including an incredible Gueuze that still makes my mouth water just thinking about it. Their knowledgeable staff are always on hand to guide you through their selections, ensuring a fantastic experience.

Brasserie Cantillon
As my partner aptly put it, Brasserie Cantillon is nothing short of a Mecca for dedicated beer lovers, especially if your goal is to experience truly unique Belgian beers that are nearly impossible to find back home. The beers produced here lean heavily towards the sour side, meaning they might not appeal to every palate. However, for those who, like me, absolutely adore sour beers, a visit to Cantillon is an essential pilgrimage. Be sure to eat a substantial meal before you arrive, as there’s no food available on site, and the surrounding neighborhood doesn’t offer many good dining options. This is purely a destination for the dedicated appreciation of exceptional Lambic and Gueuze beers.
NOTE: Brasserie Cantillon operates on a cash-only basis, so be sure to come prepared! If you find yourself without cash, the friendly staff at the swag shop are usually happy to assist you.

Hilton Bien Belge Living Lounge
Located within the elegant Hilton Brussels City hotel (more details on the hotel itself below!), the chic Bien Belge Living Lounge offers a delightful atmosphere, perfect for either commencing an evening out or concluding a day of extensive beer-tasting adventures. They boast a surprisingly excellent beer list, featuring offerings from a new favorite brewery of mine, Brussels Beer Project. I was genuinely impressed by the variety of beers, wines, and cocktails available, as lobby bars in my experience typically aren’t the most exciting. It’s an ideal, sophisticated spot for a relaxing nightcap before you head up to your room for some well-deserved rest.

What to See in Brussels: Uncovering Charm & Culture
Brussels is a city rich in history, art, and unique charm. Beyond the well-trodden paths, you’ll find incredible sights that tell the story of this fascinating capital. Here are my top picks for what to explore during your 48 hours in Brussels.
Le Carillon du Mont des Arts
One of my most cherished discoveries was a sight we stumbled upon purely by chance as we ascended the hill towards the captivating Sablon district. Le Carillon du Mont des Arts is a magnificent Jacquemart carillon clock, featuring 24 bells and 12 charming figurines that spring to life at the top of every hour. It’s a truly enchanting spectacle, though it’s worth noting that the clock is somewhat discreetly nestled between two buildings, making it a delightful surprise to find. I highly recommend timing your visit to catch its full performance at noon for the most impressive experience!

The Sablon Neighborhood
Located in the upper town, the Sablon neighborhood is a truly historic and picturesque area that effortlessly blends its rich past with a vibrant, modern present. It’s adorned with an array of new shops, exquisite restaurants, and charming cafes. We absolutely adored exploring Sablon because it strikes the perfect balance between classic European elegance and a funky, contemporary vibe. Every corner reveals another photographic opportunity, making it a joy to wander through.

Seriously, this level of gorgeousness and unique character couldn’t be fabricated; it’s genuinely like stepping into a movie set!

Belgian Comic Strip Center
One of the unexpected highlights of our trip was undoubtedly the Belgian Comic Strip Center. Housed in a magnificent Art Nouveau building designed by Victor Horta, this museum is an absolute delight for visitors of all ages, filled with original works, historical insights, and fascinating exhibits dedicated to iconic Belgian comics like The Smurfs and Tintin. Specifically for adults, do not miss the wonderfully humorous (and often edgy or racy) comic strips featuring “Dickie” displayed on the walls of the tiny screening room on the main floor. We easily spent hours here, completely engrossed, and could have happily stayed many more, discovering new details around every corner.

The Grand-Place
A visit to Brussels would, of course, be incomplete without experiencing the magnificent Grand-Place. As the central square of the Old Town, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site that truly lives up to its reputation. Here, you can marvel at the opulent, gold-trimmed guildhalls and the intricate architectural details that adorn every building, each telling a story of Brussels’ rich history and wealth. The sheer grandeur and extravagant decoration of the square are breathtaking. My advice: grab an early morning coffee and a doughnut from a nearby bakery, find a quiet spot, and soak in the majestic atmosphere before the endless hordes of tourists descend upon the square. Afterwards, allow yourself to wander down any of the surrounding streets, where you’ll discover some of the finest Belgian chocolate you will ever taste. Look out for Leonidas for exceptional truffles and chocolate bars, and Galler Chocolatier for an even wider selection of gourmet truffles.

Brussels’ Peeing Statues: Manneken Pis, Jeanneke Pis & Zannekin Pis
Manneken Pis is an undeniable cultural phenomenon in Brussels. This small statue of a naked boy peeing draws tourists like a magnet, an odd focal point for such strong attraction. To be honest, seeing it was a quick 10-second stop for us, marked by a couple of hurried photos before we moved on. Its female counterpart, Jeanneke Pis, a similar statue, can also be found tucked away somewhere in the city.

The only “peeing statue” we truly enjoyed encountering was Zannekin Pis, the peeing dog. Discoverable on a random, less-trafficked street, far from the bustling tourist crowds, Zannekin Pis is nestled amidst charming street art and a wonderfully quiet, local neighborhood. Yes, it might seem peculiar for a city to feature three peeing statues, but since it’s a genuine local quirk, I highly recommend visiting the one that offers a more peaceful and authentic experience, away from the throngs of sightseers.

Where to Stay in Brussels: Hilton Brussels City
When exploring a new city and aiming to maximize every moment, selecting the right accommodation is paramount. My criteria always include a central location, fair pricing, excellent proximity to public transportation, and, crucially, complimentary Wi-Fi (especially vital when avoiding international data roaming charges!). The Hilton Brussels City impressively ticks all of these essential boxes and more, making it an ideal base for your Brussels adventure.

Strategically situated in the bustling downtown area, the hotel is perfectly positioned directly alongside the vibrant Rue Neuve shopping district. This means you’re just a short, pleasant walk away from the historic Old Town and the engaging Belgian Comic Strip Center. Its prime location allows you to effortlessly walk to nearly all of the city’s major sights, as well as to many of the fantastic eateries and lively beer bars I’ve recommended in this guide!

Once inside the Hilton Brussels City, you’ll discover a comprehensive range of amenities designed for comfort and convenience. From reliable free Wi-Fi throughout the property to the delightful hotel lobby bar, every detail is considered. The rooms feature incredibly comfortable beds, ensuring a restful night’s sleep, and – a significant bonus often overlooked in European hotels – truly fantastic water pressure in the showers! It’s these thoughtful touches that elevate your stay from simply comfortable to genuinely relaxing.
The front desk staff consistently proved to be exceptionally helpful. They provided clear walking directions to various attractions, offered excellent restaurant recommendations, and even shared valuable tips on where to purchase the best local beers without falling victim to overpriced tourist traps (a common issue around Grand-Place, so remain vigilant!). Their local insights and genuine hospitality significantly enhanced our overall experience.

Overall, the Hilton Brussels City is a superb choice for your home base while exploring Brussels. From starting your day with a hearty breakfast to winding down with a delicious Belgian beer at the end of a long day of sightseeing, you’ll be incredibly grateful for the comfortable accommodations, the well-appointed rooms, and the warm, friendly staff. It truly provides a welcoming haven in the heart of the city.
