ingredients

  • 4 cups cooked french fries you can use this recipe or this one for shoestring fries, or your favorite frozen variety!
  • 1 cup chunky green chili sauce see below for the brand I prefer, or use your favorite local variety!
  • 1 cup cooked pulled pork
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded monterrey jack cheese
  • Garnish: sliced jalapeño sour cream, chopped cilantro, lime wedges.

instructions

  • In a large saucepan, heat green chili over medium heat until gently simmering. Stir in the cooked pulled pork until it’s thoroughly warmed through, ensuring it absorbs some of that delicious chili flavor.
  • Arrange half of your crispy fries evenly in a desired oven-safe baking dish. Generously sprinkle half of the shredded cheddar cheese and half of the shredded Monterrey Jack cheese over the fries. Next, spoon half of the warm green chili pulled pork mixture over the cheesy fries. Add the remaining fries, then top with the rest of the green chili pulled pork. Finally, distribute the remaining cheddar and Monterrey Jack cheeses over the top, ensuring every fry gets covered.
  • Place the baking dish under a preheated broiler for 5 to 7 minutes, or until the cheese is beautifully melted, bubbly, and slightly golden. Keep a close eye on it to prevent burning. Serve immediately with additional green chili sauce on the side, a sprinkle of sliced jalapeños for an extra kick, a dollop of cool sour cream, fresh chopped cilantro, and bright lime wedges for garnish. Enjoy your ultimate game day feast!

Crafting the Ultimate Game Day Fries: A Deep Dive into the Components

Creating truly epic Green Chili Pulled Pork Cheese Fries involves understanding and appreciating each layer of flavor and texture. It’s a symphony of comfort food, designed to be both satisfying and easy to prepare for a crowd.

The Foundation: Perfectly Crispy Fries

The base of any great loaded fry dish is, naturally, the fries themselves. For these Green Chili Pulled Pork Cheese Fries, you want fries that can hold up to the hearty toppings while maintaining a delightful crispness. Whether you opt for homemade, freshly cut potatoes, or prefer the convenience of high-quality frozen french fries, the goal is always maximum crispiness. Shoestring fries offer a delicate crunch, while thicker-cut steak fries provide a more substantial bite. Whichever you choose, ensure they are cooked to a golden-brown perfection, either baked in the oven until shatteringly crisp or fried for that classic indulgent texture. A good fry is the unsung hero, providing the salty, starchy canvas for our magnificent toppings.

The Hearty Topping: Flavorful Pulled Pork

Next up is the star protein: tender, succulent pulled pork. This savory component adds incredible depth and richness to the dish. You can prepare your own pulled pork using a slow cooker, instant pot, or smoker, seasoning it with your favorite BBQ rub or a simple blend of salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. If you’re short on time, many grocery stores offer pre-cooked pulled pork that just needs to be warmed and perhaps seasoned a little extra. The key is to have pork that’s falling apart, juicy, and packed with flavor, ready to soak up the green chili goodness.

The Star of the Show: Authentic Green Chili Sauce

No Green Chili Pulled Pork Cheese Fries would be complete without, well, the green chili! This is where the dish truly gets its Colorado soul. Authentic green chili sauce, often made with roasted Hatch chiles, offers a complex flavor profile that is both spicy and earthy, with a distinctive smoky undertone. The chunky variety, as preferred in this recipe, adds textural interest and ensures a generous coating for every forkful. You can find excellent jarred or canned green chili sauces in most supermarkets, but if you have access to a local Colorado brand or can make your own with fresh roasted chiles, that will elevate the flavor even further. The heat level can vary, so choose one that suits your preference – from mild and flavorful to fiery and bold!

The Melted Embrace: Cheesy Goodness

What’s a fry dish without an abundance of melted cheese? For these fries, we’re using a classic combination of shredded cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses. Cheddar brings a sharp, savory tang and a beautiful orange hue, while Monterey Jack offers a milder, creamier melt that creates those irresistible cheese pulls. The combination ensures a rich, gooey blanket over the fries and pork, sealing in all the flavors and providing that comforting, cheesy experience we all crave. When melted under the broiler, these cheeses become golden and bubbly, a perfect contrast to the spicy chili and savory pork.

Assembling Your Game Day Masterpiece: Layer by Layer

The beauty of these Green Chili Pulled Pork Cheese Fries lies not just in their individual components, but in how they come together. The layering is crucial for ensuring every bite is a perfect blend of flavors and textures. First, you’ll heat your green chili sauce until it’s simmering, then stir in the pulled pork. This allows the pork to warm through and absorb the delicious chili, creating a harmonious mixture. Next, in your chosen baking dish, you’ll create a foundational layer of half the crispy fries. On top of this, evenly distribute half of both the cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses, followed by half of the flavorful green chili pulled pork. Repeat these layers with the remaining ingredients, ensuring a generous distribution of all the wonderful toppings. Finally, a quick trip under the broiler transforms the dish, melting the cheese into a bubbly, golden crust that signals it’s ready to be devoured. This strategic layering guarantees a rich, satisfying experience from top to bottom.

Customization and Serving Suggestions

While these Green Chili Pulled Pork Cheese Fries are perfect as is, they also lend themselves beautifully to customization. After they emerge from the broiler, bubbling and golden, consider adding a variety of garnishes to enhance both flavor and visual appeal. Sliced jalapeños (fresh or pickled) can provide an extra kick, while a dollop of cool sour cream can balance the spice. Freshly chopped cilantro adds a bright, herbaceous note, and a few lime wedges squeezed over the top offer a refreshing burst of citrus. For even more indulgence, you might consider adding a sprinkle of chopped green onions, a drizzle of your favorite hot sauce, or even some crumbled cotija cheese. These fries are a fantastic centerpiece for any game day party, perfect when served alongside a cold beer or a refreshing homemade iced tea. They are designed to be shared, encouraging everyone to dig in and enjoy the communal spirit of football and fantastic food.
