TO EAT

Eska (Karlín)

For an unparalleled lunch experience in Prague, the Michelin Bib Gourmand-awarded Eska in the Karlín district is an absolute must-visit. Its setting is bright and crisp, with whimsical vegetables subtly hanging from the upstairs ceiling, creating an atmosphere that is both lively and inviting. Every detail at Eska, from its visible open kitchens to the thoughtfully mismatched plates and silverware, draws you deeper into its culinary narrative. While I could elaborate endlessly on its charming aesthetics, the true star here is undeniably the food itself.

Delicious modern Czech cuisine at Eska

I am a fervent supporter of Michelin Bib Gourmand winners, as they consistently deliver exceptionally creative and delicious food at a more accessible price point. The dishes at Eska are incredibly inventive and bursting with flavor—the kind of meal you’d typically expect to pay hundreds for, yet it remains wonderfully affordable. Offering original, vibrant, and innovative Czech-inspired cuisine, Eska is a dining experience not to be missed for its exceptional quality and value.

Eska Restaurant interior and food presentation

Recommended Bites: Begin with their incredible homemade bread and butter, featuring creamy, hand-churned butter alongside a robust bread that stands out even in Prague’s bread-rich landscape. Next, try the unique Potatoes in Ash – beautifully charred potatoes served in a rich, creamy egg-based sauce, enhanced with dill and cheese, creating a deeply comforting and flavorful bowl. The Roast Beef Neck with red wine and onion is incredibly tender, literally melting in your mouth. For dessert, indulge in a traditional Czech Kremrole – a light, marshmallowy cream-filled pastry that offers an airy, flaky texture, pairing perfectly with a post-meal espresso.

Kolkovna Olympia (Lesser Town)

Upon our arrival in Prague, we were thoroughly exhausted after a week of travel and a disappointing airport meal in Brussels. Arriving late, we sought a nearby dinner recommendation from our hotel’s helpful staff (more on the hotel below!). They directed us to Kolkovna Olympia in the Lesser Town, a chain restaurant that proved to be exactly what we needed: authentic, down-home Czech comfort food. This vibrant local spot was bustling even on a weeknight, serving up flavorful dishes, refreshingly chilled and affordable beer, all at a reasonable price for a consistently satisfying meal. It was the perfect introduction to traditional Czech cuisine in a lively setting.

Traditional Czech Goulash served at Kolkovna Olympia

Recommended Bites: The Devil’s Toast is a hearty delight, featuring savory pork, spicy pepper, onion, and sauerkraut, served with a side of cheese and bread in a charming little pot. Their Goulash, a thick, warm, and rich stew, comes with bread and potato pancakes, making it the ideal hearty meal to complement and balance out all the delicious Czech beer you’ll be enjoying.

Quirky interior of Little Break Cafe in Prague

Little Break (Jewish Quarter – *Note: This location has since closed*)

During a stroll through the Jewish Quarter, shortly after visiting the Spanish Synagogue, we stumbled upon Little Break – a charmingly quirky and eclectic café. Tucked away on a side street, this spot immediately caught our eye with its promise of fresh pastries and warming mulled wine. Its whimsical atmosphere and unique decor, featuring wood accents, chalkboard signs, and thoughtful details like pillows and blankets on benches, made it utterly irresistible. While this particular café has since closed, it exemplifies the kind of delightful, hidden gems one can discover in Prague’s vibrant neighborhoods. Keep an eye out for similar independent cafes offering delicious coffee and sweets, as Prague is full of such inviting nooks.

Cozy seating area at Little Break Cafe

Recommended Bites (if you find a similar charming spot): An Apple Strudel served with a rich, creamy sweet cream ice cream; a fragrant Mulled Wine infused with cinnamon and orange, far superior to the ubiquitous street cart versions; and a robust Irish coffee, perfectly strong and not overly sweet, offering a comforting end to your exploration.

Traditional Czech dishes at Lokál Inn

Lokál Inn

While Lokál boasts several locations across Prague, I highly recommend visiting the one situated on the west side of the Charles Bridge, away from the bustling Old Town and closer to the iconic Lennon Wall. This particular branch offers a far more relaxed atmosphere, with significantly shorter wait times and a noticeable presence of locals over tourists. It’s the perfect place to savor authentic, classic Czech dishes alongside excellent beer. If you’re seeking simple, hearty meals in a laid-back setting, Lokál Inn is your ideal spot. After your meal, consider a stroll to the nearby Shakespeare & Co bookstore before continuing to the vibrant Lennon Wall.

Recommended Bites: Indulge in their hearty sausages, perfectly fried cheese, and their delicious potato and bread sides – all excellent choices for a satisfying snack or lunch. Don’t shy away from trying the surprising beer and orange soda concoction. It might sound unusual, but it’s incredibly refreshing and a delightful local twist that will surely surprise your taste buds!

Delicious Trdelník street pastry in Prague

Random Sidenote: No visit to Prague is complete without grabbing a Trdelník from a street cart around the city! This sweet, cinnamon-sugar-coated pastry, often filled with ice cream or Nutella, is an absolutely delicious and iconic Czech treat that you simply must try.

Cocktails

AnonymouS Shrink’s Office (New Town)

If you’re seeking a truly extraordinary cocktail experience in Prague, drop everything and make your way to AnonymouS Shrink’s Office. This establishment offers an unparalleled, all-inclusive experience unlike any other bar I’ve encountered, making it a pilgrimage for the discerning cocktail connoisseur. From the moment you step inside, you are enveloped in a dark, alluring world. The initiation begins with a serving of magical cordials – reminiscent of Mary Poppins, these liquids dramatically change color upon contact with the glass and then again in an adjacent glass, adding an element of captivating wonder.

Unique cocktail presentation at AnonymouS Shrink's Office

As you savor your cordial, you’re presented with a menu adorned with Rorschach inkblots, each depicting different images and colors. Your task is to select the one that most appeals to you, but the experience doesn’t end there. You’ll be asked to explain your choice and answer additional questions about your preferred flavor profiles. The bartender then vanishes to craft your bespoke drink, leaving you to relax on plush leather couches as old jazz music gently fills the space between brick columns. This entire process is simply enchanting. The bartenders’ dedication to creating a unique, personalized experience for each guest is truly remarkable. Every visit promises a distinct encounter, but one constant remains: you’ll enjoy astonishing cocktails, often featuring their own homemade bitters and blends – they even craft bitters with a delicate spray of oak barrel essence, which is simply divine.

Expertly crafted drinks at AnonymouS Shrink's Office

Recommended Sips: Based on my choice of a fiery red inkblot adorned with spicy peppers, I was served an exceptionally fresh and smoky homemade Bloody Mary, crafted with peppers and tomatoes. The mezcal added a wonderful depth, and the tortilla chips and cheese garnish were a delightful touch (it even inspired me to create my own Nacho Spicy Bloody Mary!). “The Man” opted for a simpler card, which resulted in a smooth whiskey cocktail garnished with lemon rind. Intriguingly, the rind was rubbed on his dominant drinking hand. The bartender explained this technique imparts the lemon essence without the bitterness of the rind or diluting the drink by placing it on the rim – a testament to their incredible attention to detail and commitment to flavor.

The Banker’s Bar (Old Town)

When exploring Old Town and feeling a thirst coming on, take a delightful detour to The Banker’s Bar. This engaging spot boasts a playful banking and bank-robbing theme, transporting you back in time. With creative cocktails named after legendary bank robbers, the bar masterfully integrates its theme into every aspect, offering a truly immersive and enjoyable break from sightseeing in Prague’s historic center.

Themed cocktails at The Banker's Bar

Recommended Sips: Try the “Horse Saddle,” a robust drink inspired by Jesse James, featuring smoky mezcal, jerky, and tobacco essences for a smooth, full-bodied experience. The “Bad Hero,” dedicated to Dillinger, offers a sweet and fresh finish akin to a julep, but with a unique, very spring-like dill twist. For a romantic yet bold choice, the “Thorny Love” from Bonnie & Clyde combines whiskey, blackberry puree, and their in-house coffee liqueur, creating a rich and intriguing flavor profile.

Parlour (New Town)

If your itinerary allows for another intimate cocktail experience, Parlour in New Town is a charming tiny spot worth seeking out. This bar further exemplifies Prague’s burgeoning cocktail prowess, distinguishing itself by prioritizing the customer’s preferences over a fixed menu. Housed in a beautifully revamped cellar, Parlour exudes a cozy, local ambiance, making you feel right at home with its inviting atmosphere.

Here, the skilled bartenders engage with you, getting a sense of your preferred flavors and spirits, and then expertly craft a bespoke drink tailored to your palate. It’s a truly personalized approach that guarantees a delightful and surprising beverage experience, making each visit unique.

Wine

Bouvard&Pécuchet (New Town)

Beyond its renowned beer and cocktail scenes, Prague also boasts exceptional wine bars that seem plucked from the pages of a chic European magazine. We serendipitously discovered Bouvard&Pécuchet in New Town, seeking a respite from beer, and were instantly transported to the sophisticated ambiance of Southern France. Lounging on a white couch, sipping a robust red wine, it was hard to believe we were in the heart of Prague. This wine bar possesses a distinct, inviting personality, and its owner is remarkably knowledgeable, ensuring you can spend hours savoring the finest French grape selections in a truly elegant and relaxed setting.

Bokovka (Old Town)

Bokovka is, quite frankly, everything I desire in a wine bar. The moment I entered this lively establishment, I was utterly captivated. This dimly lit bar is undeniably one of Prague’s best spots for a cozy evening, perfect for sharing a glass or two of wine with a loved one. What truly stole my heart were the wide-open windows, inviting guests to snuggle into the window bays. Adorned with thick, furry blankets and surrounded by small tables flickering with candlelight, the ambiance is incredibly romantic and intimate. You’ll feel as though you’ve found your own secluded corner of the world. An added bonus: if you’re staying at The Miss Sophie’s Charles Bridge Hotel (formerly The Nicholas Hotel Residence), you can purchase a bottle from Bokovka and enjoy it back in your room, complete with proper wine glasses and a fridge to chill any leftovers.

Beer

Letná Beer Garden (Letná)

For a quintessential Prague beer experience coupled with spectacular panoramic views, head to the Letná Beer Garden. Perched atop a hill, this popular spot offers the city’s finest vantage point, overlooking the Vltava River, Old Town, and the charming Jewish Quarter. It’s nestled within a beautiful park, making it a delightful area for a leisurely stroll among vibrant flowers and historic statues, with incredible vistas at every turn. Grab a local brew, find a spot, and soak in the magnificent scenery – it’s an unbeatable way to enjoy a sunny afternoon in Prague, immersing yourself in local culture and breathtaking landscapes.

BeerGeek & BeerGeek Pivoteka (Bottle Shop) (Vinohrady)

Without a doubt, BeerGeek is the premier destination for beer lovers in Prague. While it’s located slightly off the main tourist paths in the Vinohrady district, Prague’s efficient metro system makes it easily accessible. This lively and engaging beer bar offers an incredible selection of craft beers from around the world, making it the perfect place to sample new brews and even grab a bite – their wings are highly recommended! After enjoying the bar, be sure to take a short 5-10 minute walk to their BeerGeek Pivoteka (bottle shop). Here, you can find seriously unique bottled beers, some even from distant places like Estonia, to take back to your hotel and savor later. It’s a true treasure trove for any beer enthusiast looking to explore global and local craft beers.

TO DO

Beer Spa Bernard

This was an utterly unexpected highlight of our trip. While researching unique beer experiences in Prague, “The Man” and I stumbled upon a video of the Beer Spa Bernard, located right in the city’s heart. Initially, the idea seemed almost comically indulgent: bathing in wooden tubs filled with hops, all while enjoying unlimited beer. A joke, perhaps? However, delving deeper, we discovered the genuine therapeutic benefits of hops and yeast, combined with the promise of a relaxing massage. Deciding “why not?”, we booked it, and it turned out to be the number one activity I recommend in Prague.

(Please excuse the less-than-perfect phone photos!)

Essentially, it’s a luxurious spa treatment paired with an endless supply of delicious Bernard beer. You can unwind and soak in bubbling bathtubs for a blissful half-hour, allowing the natural ingredients to work their magic. Afterward, you’re gently wrapped in heated blankets, letting the hops and yeast further penetrate and rejuvenate your skin. The experience culminates with a soothing massage, and you depart with a full-sized beer of your choice. And yes, I absolutely mentioned the unlimited beer alongside all this spa bliss! It might sound unconventional, but it was incredibly fun and refreshing. I’m seriously contemplating bringing a concept like this to Denver, as it’s truly a unique and enjoyable way to relax and experience Prague.

Prague Castle

A visit to Prague Castle is essential, if only for the truly remarkable views it offers of the city – they are nothing short of magical. Beyond the breathtaking panoramas, I highly recommend stepping inside the castle complex to explore its magnificent interiors, especially St. Vitus Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture.

St. Vitus Cathedral interior at Prague Castle

There’s an undeniable pull in cathedrals and castles that always resonates with me. Standing within a grand hall like this evokes a profound sense of awe, regardless of one’s beliefs. The sheer scale and intricate craftsmanship of structures built centuries ago, long before electricity or modern technology, are truly mind-boggling. You can’t help but marvel at the dedication and skill of the builders who labored to create such spectacularly gorgeous architecture, leaving a lasting legacy for generations.

Prague Charles Bridge

Of course, the iconic Charles Bridge is a quintessential Prague experience. You’ll likely find yourself crossing it multiple times, especially if you opt to stay at the fantastic Miss Sophie’s Charles Bridge Hotel (details below!). Walking across, you’ll be captivated by the stunning Baroque statues lining its sides and the picturesque views of the Vltava River, Prague Castle, and the charming cityscape. It’s a truly unforgettable promenade, bustling with artists and musicians, offering constant visual delights.

Lennon Wall, a symbol of peace in Prague

Lennon Wall

The Lennon Wall stands out as one of my absolute favorite spots in Prague. To reach it, you’ll first cross a quaint little bridge, where you might spot a whimsical troll statue on the river – yes, seriously! Just look for it; it adds a touch of fairy tale to the journey.

Turn the corner, and you’re immediately greeted by an explosion of color on a long wall, a vibrant testament to peace and love. The meaningful quotes and bright, ever-changing artwork adorning the wall are truly inspiring. If you’re fortunate, you might even encounter a talented singer strumming their guitar, filling the air with iconic Beatles songs. It’s a deeply moving experience, particularly if you visit earlier in the day before the crowds become too dense, allowing for a more intimate reflection on its powerful message.

Colorful graffiti and messages on the Lennon Wall

Afterward, be sure to pop into the Yellow Submarine for a pint – because, naturally, The Beatles legacy deserves a toast and a themed drink!

Jewish Quarter

Exploring the historic Jewish Quarter with a reliable guide, such as Rick Steves Prague, offers the most insightful experience. I recommend purchasing entry primarily for the Old-New Synagogue, which allows you to immerse yourself in the oldest active synagogue in Prague, filled with centuries of history. For the other synagogues and historical sites, you can simply observe their exteriors while reading about their rich history through your guidebook. This approach not only provides a comprehensive understanding but also helps save a bit on entry fees while still appreciating the profound significance of this neighborhood.

Vyšehrad

I absolutely adored wandering through the ancient Vyšehrad fortress. Again, a guide like Rick Steves’ proved invaluable, providing historical context and a well-structured walking tour to ensure we didn’t miss any significant details. The sprawling grounds offer a serene escape from the city’s hustle, perfect for a leisurely afternoon of discovery.

Historic Vyšehrad fortress walls

The views from the fortress ramparts are truly spectacular, offering breathtaking vistas of the Vltava River and the surrounding Prague cityscape, a photographer’s dream.

Panoramic city view from Vyšehrad fortress

Moreover, the cemetery within Vyšehrad is quite breathtaking. While I wouldn’t typically use such a word for a cemetery, this one is truly unique. With its exquisitely ornate tombstones and profound, serene silence, a walk through this hallowed ground is deeply moving. It’s a place where art, history, and tranquility converge, offering a peaceful space for reflection. Words alone can scarcely do it justice, so the accompanying photographs will hopefully convey its unique beauty and tranquil atmosphere.

Astronomical Clock

The Old Town Square, where the famous Astronomical Clock is located, can be quite crowded during the day. However, it’s absolutely worth braving the throngs at least once to witness the clock’s intricate hourly show. Observing all its complex movements, with the procession of the Apostles, it’s astonishing to consider that this marvel was constructed over 600 years ago, long before modern technology. The detailed craftsmanship and mechanical precision are truly astounding, making it a timeless spectacle in the heart of Prague.

Prague Communism and Nuclear Bunker Tour

Among our many explorations in Prague, this tour was one of the most surprising and profoundly impactful. Did you know that a remarkably preserved nuclear bunker from the 1950s lies deep beneath the city? Designed to accommodate 5,000 people, the sheer scale of it is mind-boggling once you’re inside. It’s filled with untouched rooms, fascinating communism relics, and an immense amount of history. This tour serves as a powerful reminder of how recently Prague emerged from under the communist regime, offering a stark and educational glimpse into a pivotal period of Czech history and the enduring resilience of its people.
