My last visit to Chicago in June was unexpectedly cut short. While the initial portion of the trip was absolutely fantastic, an urgent family matter called us home earlier than planned. Though the circumstances were challenging, I’m grateful for the incredible experiences we packed into our time, particularly in one of Chicago’s most captivating neighborhoods – Fulton Market, often considered the heart of the West Loop.

Fulton Market has undergone a remarkable transformation over the years. Once a bustling district dominated by meat-packing plants, warehouses, and industrial operations, it has now blossomed into a vibrant hotspot. Today, it’s renowned for its truly incredible restaurants, stylish bars, boutique hotels, and unique shops, making it a must-visit destination for anyone looking to experience the modern pulse of Chicago.

The energy we encountered during our time there was utterly intoxicating. The streets were perpetually alive, filled with the buzz of conversations, the aroma of diverse cuisines, and a constant flow of wandering people. It’s a place where every corner holds a new discovery, reflecting the city’s dynamic spirit.

Chicago Food Planet Tour – Gateway To The West Loop

While I often enjoy crafting my own food adventures in new neighborhoods, sometimes the best way to truly immerse yourself is through a professionally guided food tour. These tours offer a fantastic opportunity to sample small, curated bites from multiple establishments, providing a broad taste of the local culinary scene without committing to full entrees at every stop. It’s also an excellent way to discover hidden gems and learn about the area’s history and culture from a local expert.

The “Gateway To The West Loop” tour by Chicago Food Planet was an absolute delight for me and my partner. Over the course of the engaging walking tour, we visited five distinct and equally delicious spots. From savoring classic Italian flavors to indulging in authentic Roman-style pizza and so much more, the entire experience was simply fantastic. Our tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate, making the journey through Fulton Market even more enjoyable. Plus, there’s something uniquely special about exploring a city’s food scene with a group of fellow enthusiasts – it transforms into a walking community table where connections are easily made.

A personal note from the tour: at the time, I was pregnant and had to graciously decline the included alcoholic pairings. My partner and the kind family on our tour were very understanding, and they even gifted us a thoughtful present for the baby, creating one of those wonderfully spontaneous and heartwarming moments you can’t plan for. It added an extra layer of sweetness to an already memorable day.

Let me share more details on some of my favorite bites from this particular tour. Trust me, this is an experience that is worth every penny, especially with the optional booze pairings that elevate the flavors even further!

Cemitas Puebla – A highlight was definitely the cemita bun, a Mexican sandwich that, if you haven’t tried, you absolutely must seek out! Their version featured a generously stuffed cemita with savory pulled chicken, smoky chipotle, creamy avocado, and rich cheese. The recipe, faithfully traced back to Tony Anteliz’s family in Puebla, Mexico, delivered an unparalleled taste of authenticity and tradition. The blend of textures and bold flavors was truly unforgettable.

Bonci – This stop transported me straight back to the streets of Rome with their authentic Roman-style pizza, sold by the pound. The crust was exquisitely fluffy and airy, a perfect base for the fresh, high-quality toppings. It captured the essence of true Roman pizza, a delightful contrast to other styles, and a nostalgic culinary journey for anyone who has experienced pizza in Italy.

Do Rite Donuts – Proving that simple food, when executed perfectly, can be extraordinary. Their old-fashioned buttermilk doughnut boasted the most incredible texture I’ve ever encountered in a doughnut. It was crisp on the outside yet unbelievably moist and tender on the inside. This comforting treat even maintained its delightful quality during our impromptu road trip home the next day, providing much-needed solace. It’s a testament to their dedication to craftsmanship.

Kuma’s Corner – I’m incredibly excited that Kuma’s Corner is making its way to Denver soon! This place is truly unique, offering a heavy metal and horror movie theme that perfectly complements their “killer burgers.” The memory of sitting there, watching a hilariously bad horror film like Walrus, sipping a local beer, and devouring a beef slider topped with rich pulled pork, is forever etched in my mind. It was dripping with greasy, satisfying goodness, and I literally cannot wait for them to open in Denver to experience that flavor explosion again!

Must-Have Coffee Fix

For any true foodie and explorer, a great coffee spot is essential for fueling your adventures. LIMITLESS is an absolute standout cafe in Fulton Market, (they also boast a location in River North if you find yourself in that area). Their menu goes far beyond your typical coffee offerings, featuring an intriguing array of specialty lattes. I was particularly tempted by their charcoal latte, but given my pregnancy at the time, I opted for something equally unique and comforting: the golden milk latte.

This exquisite concoction was a harmonious blend of turmeric, ginger, black pepper, vanilla, pink salt, cayenne, honey, and milk, all topped with a delicate dusting of cinnamon. It was, quite simply, the most amazing non-espresso beverage I’ve ever had! The lingering warmth of the spices provided a lovely sense of comfort and a gentle kick that was precisely what I needed in the morning, especially since my usual espresso-based latte was off-limits.

LIMITLESS also offers creative options like lavender and rose lattes, and a “super greens” latte, ensuring there’s something intriguing for every palate. The inviting atmosphere and innovative menu make it a perfect stop to recharge and savor a moment of tranquility amidst your bustling foodie itinerary.

Fulton Market Kitchen For Dinner

From the moment you step inside Fulton Market Kitchen, be prepared for a feast not just for your taste buds, but for your eyes as well. The restaurant’s design is a masterpiece, creating a surprisingly intimate and romantic scene despite its high-ceilinged main room. Thoughtfully arranged small tables and cozy chairs, perfect for two, contribute to this inviting ambiance, though the space also gracefully accommodates larger gatherings. The entire setting envelopes you in an artistic and sophisticated embrace.

The walls are adorned with an eclectic mix of art, ranging from thought-provoking pieces to playfully cheeky finds (keep an eye out for Batman!). Stunningly colorful murals infuse the space with an energy that is both artistic and funky, ensuring there’s always something new and intriguing to catch your gaze. It’s a truly captivating spot, and not just because of the incredible staff and engaging décor!

The food, let me tell you, is downright luscious. This was unequivocally one of those meals that completely floored me, leaving an indelible mark on my culinary memory. I can still vividly recall the exquisite taste of the sourdough bread, dipped into a beef fat jus candle that slowly melted into a sweet and spicy tomato jam. The interplay of the savory jus with the vibrant jam was so irresistible, I honestly considered drinking it straight from the bowl – a small risk of singeing my hair for such a divine flavor experience!

Another true highlight of the meal was the dry-aged bolognese with cavatelli. Oh, man! The sauce possessed an astonishing depth of flavor – velvety, rich, and profoundly satisfying. My partner’s description was spot-on: “it’s a Barry White song.” And yes, it truly was. The warm, comforting richness of the sauce perfectly harmonized with the chewy, homemade cavatelli noodles, punctuated by bursts of freshness from the herbs. The creamy sauce also had a subtle smokiness, imparted by the trimmings of the dry-aged beef used in other dishes. I am now utterly determined to try and recreate this at home; while I can’t exactly dry-age beef myself, I’m certain there’s a way to capture that incredible flavor profile again!

I don’t typically eat much walleye, but Fulton Market Kitchen’s preparation was exceptional. It was served with a delectable pork jus and a bacon vegetable ragout, featuring tender peas and potatoes. This dish offered a robust combination of smoky, salty, and savory notes, transforming what is often a delicate fish into an incredibly hearty and flavorful experience unlike any I’ve had before.

Finally, dessert – both options were absolutely spectacular. First, the ice cream-filled mochi. While I’d enjoyed traditional mochi before, the addition of ice cream in the center was a revelation! Holy WOW, this has become a new obsession for me. I’ve since started buying ice cream-filled mochi weekly from my local store, though nothing quite compares to the homemade version here. The apricot ice cream and strawberry jam, paired with a delicate amaretto zabaglione, truly sang off the plate. My partner and I literally battled for the last bite!

The other dessert that made me swoon was their s’mores in a jar. This wasn’t just any s’more; it was an artistic and sensory experience. Layers of rich chocolate ganache, crunchy graham cracker, and fluffy marshmallow were carefully assembled. The real showstopper was when the jar was opened, releasing a cloud of smoke that drifted into your nostrils, instantly evoking the nostalgic aroma of a crackling campfire. This infused smoky flavor permeated the entire dessert, elevating it far beyond any s’more you could ever create at home. It was truly magical.

Should your West Loop adventure extend beyond 48 hours, or if you simply have more room in your itinerary (and stomach!) for additional culinary explorations, here are a few other stellar recommendations that should be on your radar:

Carnivale – We had the pleasure of dining here at the close of the Mediavine Conference we attended, and it was nothing short of fantastic. Carnivale is known for its vibrant Latin-inspired cuisine, bold and creative drinks, and often features live dancing, creating an incredibly energetic and festive atmosphere that truly comes alive with flavor and rhythm.

Girl & The Goat – If you’re familiar with celebrity chef Stephanie Izard, then you know of her phenomenal first hit restaurant situated right here in Fulton Market. While we didn’t get the chance to experience it on this particular trip, Girl & The Goat remains at the very top of my list for our next visit. It’s consistently celebrated for its inventive, globally-inspired dishes and vibrant atmosphere, making it a true pillar of the West Loop’s culinary scene.
